Please join us for the Annual Meeting of the General Membership being held at the Saratoga Polo Grounds, 2 Bloomfield Rd, Greenfield Center, NY on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 6:00pm.
A brief business meeting will be held to announce the results of the recent Board of Directors elections, new Association Officers for 2016-2017, and the winner of this year's Bridge Achievement Award.
Following the meeting, Dr. P. Thomas Carroll will present the feature topic, The Hudson-Mohawk Region: Silicon Valley of the Nineteeth Century. Dr. Carroll is the Senior Scholar and Treasurer of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, which among other things owns and operates the Burden Iron Works Museum. An American cultural historian with an undergraduate degree from Caltech, he specializes in the history of American science and technology. The Gateway educates visitors not just about the history of iron working in South Troy, NY, but also about the transformation of the region around the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers into the Silicon Valley of the nineteenth century. Some of the things that the area gave to the world include: the hull armor of the Monitor, the modern horseshoe, the hook-headed railroad spike, the modern fire hydrant, the lion’s share of bells cast in the New World, and the most powerful water wheel in history (and possibly the model for the first Ferris Wheel). This is sure to be a fascinating evening that will give you a greater appreciation of the deep and rich history of our area.
